Notice about Math Placement Requirement
You must
have a Math Placement score of at least 22 to be able to register for
COMM 300: Research Methods.
You cannot graduate with the Communication Major without this course.
If you do not
have the required placement of at least 22, what should you do?
1. Get help in the Math
Workshop
The Math
Workshop, located in 218 Hollenbeck Hall, offers on-campus tutoring
free of charge and is available for students:
- Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Sundays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
2. Re-take the placement test when you are ready
You can retake the Basic Skills Test when you are ready; you just need
to plan ahead to make sure you have passed with the necessary score
by the time you need to register for COMM 300. After you have sought
assistance and tutoring, you may obtain permission to take the real
test. If you have any questions, you may call the Math
Workshop at 327-7041.
- If your math placement level is below 20, you will need to take the Math Basic Skills Test.
- If your placement is 21, you will need to review some algebra by completing an online math program called "ALEKS." Please contact the Math Workshop for information about how to complete this requirement.
- If you don't like math (or you feel it doesn't like you), DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! The time crunch will unnecessarily raise your stress level.
3. Confirm that your score is at least a 22 and enroll in the course
you need
If you still have questions or are unsure of what you need to do to
become eligible for the Communication courses you need, you can ask
your Communication advisor and/or the nice folks in the Math
Workshop, who will advise you about your math requirements and help
you devise a plan to meet them.
