Departments of English and Communication Host Colloquium
redline

  September 12, 2006

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - What do the FCC, Johannes Gutenberg, and yellow journalism all have in common?  Besides the fact that they are some of Dr. Smith’s favorite things to talk about, they also are main subjects in the Comm. 290 textbook, Media and Culture: An Introduction to Mass Communication by Dr. Richard Campbell.

If you didn’t get enough of Dr. Campbell’s thought and brilliance in the textbook, what better way to gain more insight than to attend the Communication and English departments' upcoming colloquium featuring, you guessed it, Dr. Campbell.

Currently holding the position of Director of the Journalism Program at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Campbell is also an affiliate in the department of Communication.  As well as authoring the Comm. 290 textbook, he also has authored two other textbooks as well as many journal articles and essays on topics relating to journalism as well as the communication field.

In his spare time, Campbell also serves as one of the editors for two popular media publications, Critical Studies in Media Communication and Television Quarterly.  Campbell earned his PhD from Northwestern University, where he was also a Danforth Fellow, and has taught at many schools such as the University of Michigan and Marquette University.

Taking all his expertise into account, Dr. Campbell will be helping inaugurate Wittenberg's new Journalism minor by addressing “Why Media Literacy and Journalism Education are Central to Liberal Arts.”  The colloquium, a mandatory requirement to Communication as well as English majors, is also open to anyone interested.  It will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 in Bayley Auditorium.
