Assignment Description
This course is designated as a seminar. This
means that students take more of a role in the course content. One way students
will do this in this course is to locate scholarly research to discuss in class
in order to help their fellow classmates understand one way in which that
particular course concept has been researched. Each student in this course has
signed up for a topic and date. For that topic and date, students are required
to locate a scholarly journal article to read and present during a class
session. There will be a maximum of ten minutes allocated for this discussion;
students may approach this assignment however they see fit, as long as the time
is productive and educational, and highlights some of the significant concepts
and issues within the article. Explanations should be accurate and clear, and
the class should learn something substantive about the concept itself as a
result of your session. The objective is to convey information
and engage
your classmates in some way, so be creative in your approach and start early.
For this assignment, you will be graded on the following criteria:
- Accuracy of the explanations: Details are represented correctly, and it
is clear that the presenter understood what s/he read. (15 points)
- Substance of the discussion: Observations go beyond surface-level
details to reflect the complexity of the research or issues within it. (15
points)
- Involvement/engagement of the class in some way: There is a component
that takes the session beyond mere lecture. (10 points)
- Creativity in the presentation: Presenter does something interesting to
get students interested in the content. (5 points)
- Effective use of time: Session is sufficiently developed but does not
exceed the allotted ten minutes. (5 points)
During the class period prior to your session, you are required to turn in a
copy of your article and a detailed description of your plans.
