East Asian Studies 100-East Asian Cultures (4 sem. hrs.) S. Smith
An introductory survey of the societies of China, Japan and Korea primarily designed for students without background knowledge of East Asia, this course examines a series of themes that typify East Asian Societies and cultures, both historically and in the present. Likely themes include the role of the individual, groups, and the family in society; world views; aesthetic and moral values; gender roles; and the place of East Asia in today's world. Classes will include lectures, discussions of readings, and audiovisual materials. No prerequisites. Fulfills the Non-Western Culture requirement.
