BUSN 110Q - Business and Economic Statistics

Pre-requisites: MATH Placement Level 23
The objective of this course is to develop the necessary statistical and probabilistic tools to intelligently use and interpret data gathered in a business environment. Topics include descriptive statistics, probability, sampling, estimation of parameters, tests of hypotheses, simple linear regression and correlation. There will be three exams and a group data collection and analysis project.

BUSN 200S - Entrepreneurship

The introductory course is designed to provide a global introduction to subject of entrepreneurship. We will explore the creative process in a wide variety of contexts, including for-profit ventures and a broad range of service institutions. Considerable attention will be paid to the behaviors needed to transform creative ideas into viable, sustained ventures. We will examine the behavior and experiences of successful and failed entrepreneurs, paying specific attention on how these experiences can inform prospective entrepreneurs. We will explore entrepreneurial activity and opportunity in a wide variety of disciplines of specific interest to the members of the class. In addition to addressing the challenges faced by for-profit entrepreneurs, we will also demonstrate the relevance of entrepreneurial approaches for those leading social and not-for-profit ventures.

BUSN 202S - Leading the Family Enterprise

This course is designed to prepare students for positions of leadership within a family business - as owner, manager, director and/or family leader. Family dynamics within and across generations will be explored. Leadership and ownership transition issues and best practices will be a recurring topic throughout the course. Various leadership structures will be studied in detail, including unitary leadership, sibling teams, cousin collaborative, and non-family leadership models will also be explored. Every year.

BUSN 211 - Business Research Methods

This course explores the theory that supports and the practices for collecting and for analyzing both primary and secondary data. A data collection project to solve a business problem or capitalize on a business opportunity, and its analysis, are the core of this course. Prerequisite: Any statistics. Every year.

BUSN 225 - Financial Accounting

Provides an overview of the financial accounting reporting process with a primary focus on the analysis of economic events and their effect on the major financial statements (balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows). The
fundamental principles and applications for financial reporting of the corporate business organization are presented with a balanced perspective on the practice, theory and conflicts in current accounting practice. The course objectives are to present the accounting model, process of measurement, data classifications and terminology needed to effectively use and prepare financial statements.

BUSN 226 - Managerial Accounting

Managerial accounting explores the various techniques for the preparation and analysis of accounting information for organizational planning and control. The development of critical thinking skills is necessary to understand the process of reporting information for people to use rather than following a set of rules or guidelines. The fundamental concepts of cost, decision-making, planning and performance evaluation in a managerial environment are presented. In-class discussions and problem solving are utilized to gain greater understanding of the application of managerial accounting.

BUSN 260S - Organizational Behavior

Pre-requisites: None
This course explores the behavior of people in both profit and nonprofit organizations. Topics will include motivation, individual differences, group dynamics, power and leadership. The emphasis is on demonstrating how theories and principles found in textbooks actually apply to our personal lives. So, student organizations, summer jobs and Wittenberg itself will be our labs. The use of active learning minimizes lectures and focuses more on discussion, debate and experiential exercises. This requires that students do substantial reading on their own. Evaluation of student achievement is accomplished via team projects, exams, formal writing and class participation. Writing Intensive.

BUSN 326 - Intermediate Accounting II

The second course of a two course sequence. An in-depth study of financial statements, accounting concepts, accounting principles, current professional pronouncements and alternative procedures and practices as they related to Liabilities, including Pension and Lease Obligations and Stockholders' Equity.

BUSN 330 - Financial Management

Pre-requisites: ECON 190, BUSN 210, BUSN 225
Introduction to basic concepts, principles, and analytical techniques of financial management. Emphasis on planning and managing assets. Topics include financial analysis, current asset management, capital budgeting, cost of capital, financial leverage and valuation. International financial concepts are reviewed throughout the course. The course is evaluated by three objective exams which include theoretical questions; Math Intensive.

BUSN 360S - Human Resource Management

Pre-requisites: BUSN 260; ECON 190 or any social institutions course
An organization's human resources are its most fundamental asset. In HRM we will study the classic topics within the context of a diverse, changing work force: the philosophy and assumptions underlying the field; the legal background (EEO, OSHA, ADA, etc.); job analysis; employee selection; performance appraisal; training; compensation systems; safety and health. An applied project is a substantial portion of the class material and final grade. Extensive work is required outside the classroom and within teams. Evaluation of student achievement is accomplished via formal writing, team projects, essay exams, and team/class participation.

BUSN 370 - Legal Environment of Business

Pre-requisites: Junior Standing
A first course in law that introduces legal analysis, court systems, and case law. It emphasizes preventative law, i.e., avoidance of legal conflict and when to consult an attorney. Students are taught to reason by analogy and write in a legal style. Both real and hypothetical cases as well as problems are used to generate Socratic dialogues and learn how to apply concepts to factual scenarios. Major topics include crimes, torts, contracts, and products liability. Writings are integrated into a Law Anthology which includes both case analyses and reaction papers. The course is evaluated by class participation, writings, and analytical examinations. Experiential, Writing Intensive.

BUSN 425 - Advanced Accounting

Pre-requisite: BUSN 325
Advanced Accounting covers the topics of accounting for business combinations, accounting for not-for-profit entities, and accounting for partnerships. The course will be discussion/lecture with the class presenting all homework problem solutions. The grade will be based on two in-class tests (one major, one minor), class participation, and a research project.

BUSN 430 - Investments Analysis

Pre-requisite: Management 330
Introduction to the various types of financial investments including stocks, bonds, real estate and options, including analysis of various methods of valuation. In addition, the financial markets in which these securities are traded will be examined. Methods of evaluating the profitability and risk of these investments individually and as part of a portfolio of securities are presented. The course will also focus on the role of investments in the financial planning process. The course will be primarily lecture and discussion, and the grade will be based on three in-class tests, class participation and a paper.

BUSN 460 - Strategic Planning & Policy

An integration of all preceding Management courses through the study of the function and responsibility of top-level executives. The primary pedagogy is lecture, case discussion, written case-studies and oral presentations. In addition, student teams compete in an industry simulation, in which they make 10 sets of annual decisions and prepare a summary report. Writing Intensive.
