The Freeman Advisory Committee (FAC), through a program of short-term travel grants to Asia, provides opportunities for faculty and administrators with no formal background in Asian studies to add an Asian dimension to their instructional, research, and/or administrative activities and to familiarize themselves with East Asia, with its cultures, with current issues in the region, and with the curricular choices facing Wittenberg's EAS Program. Thus, it serves as a means not only of augmenting the ranks of EAS faculty, but also of informing institutional planning and decision-making. It also enables current Wittenberg EAS faculty to extend their focus within the region.
Travel and curriculum development grant recipients are selected in consultation with the Provost by the FAC. Proposals are evaluated on the basis of grantee commitment to incorporating Asian content into their teaching and to enriching Wittenberg's EAS Program, particularly in creating access points to Asian studies at multiple levels in the curriculum. Strong preference is given to proposals that create, revise, or add segments to courses in disciplines (art, education, music, and management) and regional areas (Tibet, Mongolia, Korea) where our curriculum is relatively weak.
