Major Performing Arts Groups

The Freeman grant provides, as part of the Wittenberg Series, a major East Asian performing arts group every year. These entertaining and accessible cultural performances greatly enhance the visibility of East Asian Studies on campus. They reach a wide audience, outside of the usual classroom setting.

It is hoped that exposure to a live performance by East Asian artists such as Japanese drummers or a Chinese opera troupe will have a strong impact on local audiences and students of all ages who view it for the first time, generating excitement about Asian cultures and stimulating an interest in learning more. A group's engagement in Springfield includes, in addition to a free public performance as part of the Witt Series, other related activities on campus and within the community.

In addition to the Witt Series performance, the Freeman Advisory Committee (FAC) also brings more modest campus-wide and/or community-based East Asian culture-related program activities. Check the EAS Event Calendar for information on all upcoming events.
