One goal of the EAS faculty is to have all of our students study in the East Asian country or city of their choice during their career at Witt, whether it be China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, or South Korea. We believe that it is important for our students to have a real life experience with the languages, histories, religions and politics they study on campus. We arrange for our students to spend a semester, a summer, or a whole year in a variety of programs in places such as Beijing, Tokyo, Nagoya, Seoul, Osaka, Nanjing, Mukden, and many other cities. We have exchange relationships with schools such as Sophia University and Kansai Gaidai in Japan and Fudan University in Shanghai, China. We are members of consortia that have study programs in many cities throughout East Asia, giving our students a wide range of educational and living arrangements.

Summer 2010 programs

Wittenberg in China: On the Silk Road -- a month-long interdisciplinary program of study and travel along the historic Silk routes across northern China from Beijing to the far west.  Students are introduced to contemporary and historic China through experiential learning activities, classroom lectures and discussions, site visits of cultural and historical importance, and formal and informal interactions with peoples of various ethnic communities.  The program is open to all students, regardless of majors; no Chinese language is required. Silk Road.

Japan Field Study: A month-long immersion program in Tokyo and Kyoto features a course in Japanese Culture and communication, in which students learn culturally significant concepts that help explain a variety of Japanese interaction behaviors and cultural characteristics.  Program excursions include a homestay, shrines, temples, museums, gardens and other culturally significant sites, and there are opportunities for students to travel on the weekends and explore Tokyo and Kyoto on their own.  This program is open to all students, as there are no prerequisites and no prior language study is required. Japan Field Study.
