Forming Supportive Learning Climates for Teachers and Learners

Appropriate for K-12 Teachers

Educ. 510.03 2 Semester Hours Cost: $596.00
Instructor: Ms. Amy Huneck
Time: Mon. & Wed. 4:30-6:00 March 14-May 6
Place: TBA

Participants in this course will consider how to form supportive learning communities when buildings consolidate or when schools and classrooms face issues of mobility and increased cultural diversity.  We will address how to form positive learning climates and how communication styles, interactions, and other communication behaviors affect relationships.  At the end of the course, participants will create action plans.  These will guide the learner through the process of institutional change.

Opening Achievement Options

Appropriate for K-12 teachers

Educ. 520.03 2 Semester Hours Cost: $596.00
Instructor: Lee Ann Ellsworth
Time: Mon. & Wed. 4:30-6:00 March 14-May 6
Place: TBA

It is easy to get discouraged by the external pressures of teaching and forget that many teacher-driven practices and assessment options still work.  This course provides all K-12 teachers alternatives to lock-step instructional approaches by considering the inconclusive wisdom of differentiated instruction and the creative insights of diverse assessment tools.  Participants will develop tiered lessons, anchoring activities, and a variety of assessment instruments, all of which engage student learning while responding to content standards.  This course is appropriate for all K-12 content areas.

Probability- Las Vegas Style

Appropriate for 7-12 Teachers

Educ. 530T.01 2 Semester Hours Cost: $596.00
Instructor: Dr. Bill Kraus
Time: Tues. & Thurs. 4:30-6:00 March 14-May 6
Place: Rm. 112

The primary goal of the course will be to develop an understanding of the mathematics involved in casino games and state lotteries.  The primary format of the course will be problem-based small group work.

Mathematics topics to be covered include simple probabilities, odds, compound probabilities, dependent/independent events, expected value, house advantage, the law of large numbers, standard deviation, confidence intervals, volatility, and combinations.

Students will need a calculator for every class, preferably a graphing calculator like the TI-83.  A calculator that does not have math functions available or that does not allow complex arithmetic expressions to be entered would not be appropriate.  We will also make use of the computers in the classroom and the computer lab for some class sessions.

Problem-Based Learning

Appropriate for K-12 Teachers

Educ. 530.03IN 2 Semester Hours Cost: $298.00
Instructor: Donna Jarzab and Dr. Robert Welker
Time: Tues. & Thurs. 4:30-6:00 March 14-May 6
Place: TBA

Learners will use a model of problem-based learning to explore how to engage students as problem-solvers in authentic environments.  Participants will examine how problem-based instruction has been used successfully in other settings and how teachers have facilitated student inquiry.  By the end of the course, participants will have created their own ideas for student-led projects.
