A comparatist by accident, Arthur Faber was educated in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Possessing an abiding fascination with languages generally, with the interplay of language and thought, with comparative linguistics, and most particularly with the English language and style, he is working on translations from Frisian, Dutch, and Flemish. He teaches Medieval and Renaissance literature, The Bible as Literature, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Robert Frost, Comparative Literature, Canadian Studies, fantasy, and creative writing. Recently he developed two new courses: "The 20th Century Literature of Witness and Protest" and "The Modern World as Read," focusing on non-English, non-Eurocentric literature. He has served as a reader for Advanced Placement Exams, and was selected to participate in the Educational Testing Service's "Study of National Writing Standards." His publications include poetry as well as literary criticism. In 2004, he retired.
