A Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Harvard, Richard Veler was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award at Wittenberg in 1977, the third member of the department to gain this honor. Former Associate Dean of the College and Chairperson of the English Department, he served as President of the College English Association of Ohio in 1980-1981. In 1981-82 he was Visiting Professor of American Literature in England, where he pursued research on American writers who lived or visited there. He served as General Secretary of the University and University Editor and taught courses in American literature, modern literature, a Mark Twain seminar, and introduction to literature while at Wittenberg. He edited Papers on Poe, has authored several essays, and frequently delivers papers at professional meetings.  Since his retirement in 2000, he continues to read and research Twain and enjoys traveling, antiquing and music.
