Katherine Laing Bladh, associate Professor and Co-Chair of Geology, teaches courses in igneous and metamorphic petrology, volcanic and earthquake hazard mitigation, and introductory geology. Recipient of a National Science Foundation fellowship, she has published "Volcanic Geology of the O Leary Peak Complex" and two articles on teaching geology in a liberal arts environment. Past research concerned a texture called "rapakivi" in some igneous rocks. Her current interest in interdisciplinary approach, by scientists and nonscientists, to geologic hazard mitigation (volcanic eruptions and earthquakes). Bladh, who shares an appointment at Wittenberg with her husband, Kenneth W. Bladh, attended Willamette University, earned her B.S. degree at Oregon State University, and received both the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Arizona. She came to Wittenberg in 1978.
