David C. Finster, Associate Professor and Chair of Chemistry, has received the Omicron Delta Kappa Award for Excellence in Teaching. His current research interests are electrochemical analysis of environmentally toxic metals and the application of cognitive development theory to science education. He has published articles in the Journal of Chemical Education and Liberal Education about developmental instruction in chemistry. He is on the staff of the Great Lakes College Association's Workshop on Teaching and Course Design, has served as a consultant on course design, serves on national American Chemical Society committees within the Division of Chemical Education, and teaches a National Science Foundation Chautauqua course on "Promoting Reflective Thinking in Science Classes." Finster teaches general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and a course for non-science majors titled "Chemistry and Society." He received his B.S. from Bowling Green State University and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He was a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Southern California and has done research at Purdue University. He joined the Wittenberg faculty in 1981.
