Career Opportunities and Alumni redline

During the past 15 years approximately two-thirds of Wittenberg's geology majors have pursued graduate study at major universities across America, usually with a teaching or research assistantship. Graduates are employed in all aspects of the geoscience profession from high school and college teaching to private consulting and the petroleum industry. Some, however, have chosen not to pursue geology as a profession but rather have moved into related or totally different fields. The following list summarizes the current occupations of some of our graduates and characterizes the range of occupations possible with a geology major:

Although currently residing in the Houston area, in the international arena Bill has most recently been working in Papua New Guinea. Chevron is involved in a joint project with the Angolan national oil company. After 4 years working there in a month off-month on situation, Bill and his family spent a year living in Port Moresby. most recently Bill has been working recently wrote that his international experience

  • Scott A. Engel , '92, completed a Master's Degree in Fall 1994 at Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pennsylvania. Scott is currently working as a Geologist for the Dames & Moore Group, Austin, TX. On November 4, 1996 Scott married Annette Summers Engel.
Scott recently wrote us about his experiences in southern Indiana, installing exploratory soil borings at a future industrial site. He wants us to know he's not just collecting ground water samples as the borings turned up a historic deep coal mine and required additional borings to determine the extent of the former mine and the structural integrity of the bedrock.

  • Amy Burke , '94, exploration geologist, CGAS Exploration, Inc., Columbus, OH, was recently elected president of the the Ohio Geological Society.
  • Chris Coonfare , '95, research scientist in environmental restoration, Battelle, Columbus, Ohio.
  • Annette (Summers) Engel , '95, graduate assistant,University of Texas, Austin, TX. Annette is conducting research in Movile Cave in Romania. Annette married Scott Engel November 4, 1996.
  • Toby Dogwiler , '96, graduate assistant, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO.
  • Tracy (Monegan) Rice , '96, graduate assistant, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina.
Tracy recently presented her work on phosphatic sediments,research that she initiated as part of an independent study while at Wittenberg, at the Southeastern Geological Society of America Meeting. Tracy is working with Orin Pilkey on barrier island migration rates and has had several opportunities to get involved in the public policy involved with coastal management following this past fall's hurricane activity along the North Carolina Coast.
