Mount St. Helens, Washington during 1982 eruption from the volcanic dome. The dome lies within the caldera which
was formed during the May 18, 1980 eruption. St. Helens is reflected in Spirit Lake.

If you are interested in volcanoes and/or earthquakes, this is a page for you.
I teach about the geologic hazards associated with these two and, in one course,
about the mitigation (hazard reduction such as reducing loss of life) of these hazards.
By background is from volcanic rocks (e.g. igneous petrology) which I have studied
in the western United States. I have brought this interest to a liberal arts college
environment where I hope to interest individuals in using this knowledge to protect
themselves and others from these hazards while also appreciating the beauty and
power of volcanoes and the intellectual puzzle of  attempting to predict when and how
a volcano will erupt and when an earthquake will occur.
