SEXTON, (WALTER) ELIZABETH
"The most recent development in my life
is coming to grips with the realization that the realities of my life have
far
exceeded my dreams! In July 1996,
I was chosen from a field of 36 highly qualified lawyers to become a judge
in
the 18th Judicial Circuit, DuPage County,
Illinois. Since that time, I have served in the Traffic and Domestic
Relations Divisions. I was recently
assigned as a Juvenile Court Judge. I am incredibly lucky to have
found a
career which is not only intellectually
stimulating and socially beneficial but gives me time to spend with my
family. I
truly enjoy being a public figure and
I find that having contact with the public through numerous speaking
engagements and seminars is very exciting.
Prior to being a judge, I was a trial
lawyer who specialized in plaintiff's and defendant's personal injury work
and
divorce cases. Although I loved
private practice, it did take a serious toll on my personal life in terms
of the time
commitment and stress levels.
Mike and I will be married ten years
in October; we have a wonderful daughter, Kit, who will turn seven in a
few
months. Of the many rolls I play
everyday, "Mom" is my favorite. My husband and I are saving a great
deal of
money each month so that our daughter
will also have the opportunity to attend a small liberal arts college!
I still do a lot of volunteer work.
I am currently serving my second term on the board of Directors of the
DuPage
County Bar Association. I am immediate
past chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee. I also do
a great
deal of work for the Illinois Bar Association
and this year I was co-chair of the Civil Practice and Procedure Section
Council and the 1997-1998 Allerton House
Conference. In addition, I also served as chair of the Bar Elections
Supervision Committee. I am also
on the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton, Illinois.
I returned to Wittenberg for my 20th
reunion last summer with many of my sorority sisters. As divergent
as our
paths have become in those years, it
was amazing to us that we still had so much in common. We all agreed
that the
education we received and the friendships
we made at Wittenberg have been important not only to our success in our
chosen fields, but also in developing
relationships.
I continue my interest in history by watching documentaries and talking to my husband who reads scholarly histories."
