History Abroad: Mandy Oleson Class of 2003

I
have been living and studying in Salzburg, Austria, since January 2001. I studied
last semester at Salzburg College with all American students, but this year,
I will enroll at the University of Salzburg and attend classes with other Austrian
students. I can simply say that my experience has been fantastic. I was placed
with an Austrian host family and from the beginning, they welcomed me into their
home as if I were a member of the family.Through them, I have come to appreciate
the rich tradition and culture of Austria, and now I have a second family and
a home away from home. My
time here has given me the opportunity to experience European history firsthand
and to continue in the Wittenberg tradition of cultivating the entire self.
From walking through the ruins of ancient Rome to standing on the spot of the
former Berlin Wall, from studying Michelangelo by observing his work in Italy
to attending an opera performance at the Salzburg Summer Festival, all of Europe
has become a classroom and a place for personal growth and reflection.Studying
abroad is one of the best decisions I have made.
