LODGING
A block of rooms has been reserved at the Springfield Courtyard by Marriott (downtown) at the rate of $89.00 per night plus tax. If you’d like to reserve a room at this hotel, you may reserve in one of two ways (no later than October 17 for the preferred rate:

1) call Marriott directly at (888) 720-1191 and ask for a room for the “ Japan and the World” conference (in order to get the special rate).

2) go to http://www.courtyard.com/daycs

In the Check Rates and Availability section, enter desired arrival and departure information and number of rooms/guests. Then in the “Optional Information” section, fill in the Group Code JTWJTWA (for room with one king bed) or JTWJTWB (for room with two queen beds). Then continue to make the reservation as instructed.

TRANSPORT

Airports

  • Dayton International Airport (DAY) – about 30 minutes drive from Springfield

NOTE: we will be running a shuttle service to this airport on November 10 th and November 12 th

  • Port Columbus International Airport (CMH) – about 55 minutes drive from Springfield
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) – about 1 ½ hours drive from Springfield

Local Transportation

Wittenberg University is adjacent to Springfield’s downtown, and it is walking distance from the Courtyard by Marriott. We will be running a shuttle bus to this hotel all day on November 11, and before and after John Dower’s talk on November 10. If shuttles are needed for other hotels in the city, we will be able to arrange limited trips to other locations for individuals or groups attending the conference. Parking is plentiful in downtown Springfield and on Wittenberg’s campus, which is easily reached from I-70. All events for the conference will take place in three centrally located buildings: Hollenbeck Hall, Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center, Weaver Chapel

FOOD
Registration for the conference will include the following meals and snacks on Saturday Nov. 10:

  • Continental Breakfast (fruit, danish, bagels, coffee, tea, green tea, fruit juices)
  • Morning Coffee Break (coffee, tea, green tea)
  • Lunch (croissant sandwiches & wraps – with vegetarian options, chips, salad, fruit salad, cookie, iced tea, water and lemonade)
  • Afternoon Break (soda, coffee, fresh fruit)
  • Post-conference reception (punch, coffee, tea, wontons, vegetables & dip)

Note: there will be a cash bar at the reception for those wanting to purchase alcohol.

We have also planned an optional dinner on Saturday night for participants in the conference at an additional cost of $30/person. Please indicate on your reservation form if you would like to join us for dinner. This meal will be held at Wittenberg University’s Hollenbeck Hall and will include the following menu:

RESTAURANTS

On campus, POST 95 in the Student Center offers sandwiches and wraps as well as a coffee bar and ice cream. Within walking distance of campus are several cafes and sandwich shops. Mela restaurant, located in the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in downtown Springfield, is an upscale dining establishment with a nice lounge. More information on restaurants will be available when you arrive for the conference.
