Welcome to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
redline

To understand today's world, its politics, and its economy, and to be competitive in a global marketplace, knowledge of world cultures is needed. To fully understand other cultures, knowledge of their languages is essential. Therefore, the Foreign Language area of the General Education requirements states, "A student should achieve the degree of competence in a foreign language necessary to encounter another culture on its own terms and to enhance the understanding of the structure of the language itself." All language courses, and especially those at the first year level, are structured to maximize student success with this requirement.
