Wittenberg University participates in a great variety of study abroad programs. There is nothing more rewarding than to actually use the language you have been working on so diligently. It is also wonderfully enriching to experience the culture surrounding the language. So, of course, study abroad is an important component of foreign language study at Wittenberg. Students in all of the languages not only have the chance to study in a country where their language is spoken, but they are strongly encouraged to do so. Opportunities are readily available to students to go for a semester, a summer, an entire school year, or for a specially designed time period. Of course, when you go on an officially accepted program of study, all the credits transfer to Wittenberg as credit hours toward graduation. Whether it's Chinese in Beijing, French in Dijon, Russian in Moscow, Japanese in Kyoto, German in Berlin, Spanish in Salamanca, or similar study in a variety of other cities, plan on spending time during your junior year in the country of your dreams. •Immersion Program and Service Work in Antigua, Guatemala (Summer 2005)
During the summer of 2005 twenty two students from Wittenberg University will participate in a four week immersion program organized by the Department of Foreign Languages in the historic city of Antigua, Guatemala. Students will earn eight semester hours of Spanish credit towards their major or minor. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays students will have class from 8am to 1pm (three students to one instructor) and on Tuesdays and Thursdays they will have one on one instruction from 1:30pm to 5:30pm.
Program participants (students as well as attending professors Christine McIntyre and John Cantrell) will be doing service work for a local rural primary school adopted by the Department of Foreign Languages. The project includes providing needed supplies such as paper, pencils, pens, crayons, coloring books and other necessities for the children, painting and helping with the upkeep of the school and helping the children with tutoring and organized play.
There are also numerous other activities for the Wittenberg students, field trip in and around Antigua with three weekend excursions to Chichicastenango and the market, Lake Atitlan and indigenous villages around the lake and to one of the most important Mayan cities, Tikal. This is a complete and full immersion program which should become an unforgettable and life changing experience for partipating students.
