FLLC TUTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
redline

(back to Foreign Language Learning Center)

General Description:

Tutors in the Foreign Language Learning Center (FLLC) provide a variety of services, however the most important is that of peer mentor.  Tutors engage in informal one-on-one or group tutoring.  This often includes providing oral practice through dialogs and interviews assigned by instructors.  Tutors also assist in the general running of the FLLC; for this reason they must not only have a thorough understanding of the various materials available, but must also become comfortable in their use (training on site).  For example, tutors may be asked to help tape and download student presentations, or assist a student with a particular software program.  In addition, tutors run the front desk and check out materials.

Scheduling working hours:  Tutors choose their own working hours in collaboration with the director, and then as much as possible, stay with the same schedule throughout the entire semester.  The FLLC is open from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Mon- Fri., from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Mon- Thurs., and from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. on Sundays.  We are closed on Saturdays.  The FLLC asks that you work at least six hours a week.

Requirements:  To become a tutor in the FLLC, you must be recommended by one of the language faculty in your language of specialization.  Generally, you will be at an advanced second-year level or higher, with good communication skills.  Note:  You do NOT need to be fluent!!  Peer mentoring is all about helping other students practice the language (and yourself along the way).  You won’t always know the answers, but after some training (which we provide), you will be able to offer support to your clients in areas where they may be having difficulty.  This is what peer mentoring is all about!

Contact information:  If you are interested in becoming a tutor for the FLLC, please contact the director, Dr. Bertrand, in Hollenbeck 232.  (Phone:  937-327-6356, Email: bbertrand@wittenberg.edu).  You may also contact any of the language faculty in your area.  For the list of language faculty, click here, or visit the Languages website.
