James L. Noyes, Professor of Computer Science, teaches a variety of computer science courses at all levels, including C++, FORTRAN, Mathematica, LISP, Pascal, and Scheme programming, Computational Models and Methods , Sequential & Parallel Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence , Numerical Analysis , and Optimization . He has served as a Senior Research Fellow for the National Research Council (NRC) and for several summers as a Fellow for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). His research interests are in areas that combine symbolic and numeric processing, including neural networks, expert systems, and mathematical optimization methods. He has given many professional talks and has published several papers and articles in these areas. He authored the college text, Artificial Intelligence with Common Lisp , published by D.C. Heath. He also wrote the chapter entitled "Neural Network Training" for the reference Handbook of Neural Computation , published by Oxford University Press. In addition to research papers, he has also presented papers on teaching both artificial intelligence and numerical analysis. His current curriculum interests include the development of an undergraduate Computational Science minor at Wittenberg. Noyes holds a B.S. degree with double majors in Mathematics and Physics from Morehead State University . He has an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cincinnati . He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison . Prior to his work at Wittenberg, Dr. Noyes served as a civilian mathematician, operations research analyst, and computer services branch chief for the US Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB.
