Preston Nichols
Preston Nichols
Preston Nichols, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics,
teaches a variety of courses in mathematics at Wittenberg. He is
interested in exploring the role of nonverbal visual information (including
models and computer graphics) in mathematical problem-solving. He
has attended short courses, workshops, and seminars on geometric analysis,
wavelets, and mathematical logic, and on the teaching of linear algebra
and multivariable calculus. He has previously taught mathematics at Carnegie
Mellon University and at Allegheny College. While at Carnegie Mellon,
he redesigned a course for non-technical majors as an incarnation of Geometry
and the Imagination, a course which originated at Princeton and
at the Geometry Center.
He is working on research in differential geometry, especially on problems
related to energy minimizing tangent maps. Dr. Nichols received his
B.A. degree in mathematics from Cornell College, and his Ph.D. in mathematics at the mathematics of the University
of Minnesota.
