Management Students received Honors

Springfield, Oh- Seven management majors were honored at the 2007 Honors Convocation, held today at 4:00 p.m. at the Weaver Chapel.
The Tau Pi Phi Award recipient this year was given to management senior Jessica Shirkey. This award is given to the graduating management major who combines the highest academic achievements with University contribution. Jessica A. Shirkey, from Macomb (MI), is a Wittenberg senior double majoring in Management and Theatre/Dance. She spends most of her time working in the theatre, filling various roles including: stage manager, lighting designer, and head of publicity/box office. Last spring, she was a Marketing Assistant Intern for Mad River Theater Works. Shirkey also serves as faculty aide/research assistant for Dr. Gradwohl in the management department. She has worked in the theatre since high school and hopes to pursue a career in Theatre Management or Production.
Shirkey was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, one of the most prestigious honor societies (founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary). It exists to give recognition to students who have achieved high academic distinction. Shirkey was eligible for Phi Beta Kappa due to her dual major in Theater/Dance. She is the thirteenth management major to earn Phi Beta Kappa status since the establishment of the Wittenberg chapter in 1992.
Amy Nilson ’07 was recognized as the Wall Street Journal Award recipient. This award is given to the graduating management major who shows the greatest potential for career success. Nilson is a management major with an accounting concentration from Lincoln, Nebraska . Nilson is currently the student assistant to Management Department Chair Wendy Gradwohl and has had customer service positions at Abercrombie & Fitch and Liberty Savings Bank. Throughout her time at Wittenberg, Nilson has held several leadership positions, which include Treasurer of Chi Omega Sorority, News Editor of the Torch, Secretary of the Investment Club, Secretary of the Panhellenic Council, Vice President of Myers Hall Government, Secretary of Tau Pi Phi honorary, Treasurer of Omicron Delta Kappa honorary society, and Treasurer of Ivy Ring honorary society. Nilson is also a member of the Order of Omega Greek honorary society, Pick 'N Pen Academic honorary, the Teacher Effectiveness Committee, Mortar Board, and has served as both an Orientation Assistant and Rho Gamma. She has received two awards from the management department, which were the 2006 Woodrow Wilson Prize for Excellence in Management and the 2007 Wall Street Journal Award. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends, watching movies, reading a good book, and exercising. Nilson will pursue her Masters of Accountancy in the fall at Ohio State.
Juniors Matthew Lynch ’08 and Bradley Wilson ’08 were awarded the Dr. Woodrow Wilson Prize for Excellence in Management. This financial award is given to students who major and excel in management. The award was established by the widow and children of Woodrow Wilson, professor emeritus of Business Administration from 1956 to 1978.
Bradley Wilson, from New Carlisle, OH, is a junior majoring in Management with a concentration in marketing and vocal performance. He is currently employed as a marketing intern with Qbase, a data analysis company based in Beavercreek, OH and works in the Financial Aid office at Wittenberg. Wilson was recently inducted and elected President of Tau Pi Phi, a national honor society established to recognize and honor business and economic students for quality academic achievement. He is a member of The WittMen Crew, Wittenberg’s premier all-male a cappella group, serving as the secretary for the past two years. In his spare time, Wilson enjoys playing the guitar and frequently cantors at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Dayton as well as Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Carlisle.
Matt Lynch, Class of '08, is a junior at Wittenberg University. He is working on a double major in Sociology and Management, with a Marketing focus. Lynch was awarded the 2007 Dr. Woodrow Wilson Prize Excellence in Management. He was also recognized as the 2007 Junior Financial Executives International (FEI) Scholar. Lynch was recently inducted into Tau Pi Phi National Honor Society for Management and Economics, and elected as 2007-2008 Vice President. Lynch was recently inducted into the Alpha Kappa Delta National Honor Society for Sociology. Lynch will be interning with the Turner Foundation this on the NextEdge project. Lynch's future plans include obtaining a Masters degree in Marketing and working in that field.
Senior Jenna Corwin was given the Financial Executives International Award. She will be honored at a dinner later this month in Columbus. This award recognizes an outstanding senior with finance or accounting concentration based on academic achievement, leadership and service.
Corwin, from Louisville, Kentucky, is a Wittenberg senior majoring in management with a concentration in finance and minor in economics. As a summer intern for Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, she analyzed clients’ financial situations and long-term goals in order to provide recommendations for products to fill their needs. Corwin is vice-president of Wittenberg University’s Investment Club, and treasurer for the Panhellenic Council, Wittenberg’s Greek governing council. She is also a faculty aide for Wittenberg’s Management Department and served as Business and Advertising manager for the Torch, Wittenberg’s student-run newspaper. As a member of Wittenberg’s Center for Applied Management, Corwin worked with two classmates to conduct the annual Entrepreneurial Business Award project for Champaign and Clark counties in Ohio. Additionally, Corwin has worked for Harold’s Stores, Inc. as a sales associate for the past four years. During the spring of 2006, she was inducted into the Tau Pi Phi Honorary Society in Management and Economics, and was elected as its vice-president. Corwin received the Dr. Woodrow Wilson Prize for Excellence in Management and is a member of the Honors Program. She was also inducted into the Omicron Delta Kappa Involvement Honorary. Corwin became a member of the Chi Omega sorority in the fall of 2004. During her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling, and reading. Corwin recently accepted a position in business evaluation and litigation with Flagel, Huber, and Flagel (Cincinnati, OH).
The WittInvest Investment Award was given to senior Bryan Vehonsky. This award is sponsored by WittInvest Club and recognizes a student for high academic achievement who furthers the American free enterprise system via their knowledge or markets and investments.
Bryan Vehonsky, of Reynoldsburg, OH, is a Wittenberg University senior majoring in management with a concentration in accounting. Vehonsky is the current Student Director of the Wittenberg Center for Applied Management. In addition, Vehonsky has served as President of the Investment Club and of his academic honorary Tau Pi Phi to which he was inducted in the spring of 2006. During his time at Wittenberg, Vehonsky has been a member of the both the Rowing Team as well as the Wittenberg Men’s Rugby Football Club. He has been a proud member of the Iota Beta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity since his freshman year. Starting in the fall of 2007, Vehonsky will be attending The Fisher School of Business at The Ohio State University to attain his Masters of Accountancy after which he hopes to work for a large public accounting firm.
