Springfield, OH-- In June, Casey Strawser ’10 was awarded one of eight regional Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) scholarship awards and accepted an internship at Honda. The scholarship included a $5,000 award.
Casey is currently a senior at Wittenberg University graduating early in December 2009 with B.A. degree in Management with a focus in Human Resources and minor in Psychology. Over the past two years, she has interned at Honda of America Manufacturing in both the Administration and Staffing Departments. Her work focused on benchmarking projects that relied on research abilities, organization, communication, and problem solving skills. During that time she also reviewed resumes and applications as well as conducted phone screens, which developed her recruiting skills. Strawser continues her HR work by interning at Community Mercy Health Partners, a local hospital, where she works with an HR generalist and the nursing recruiter to recruit staff for the hospital and eight local nursing facilities. Her college leadership activities include being Co-President of Union Board, where she oversees $124,000 to bring large entertainment acts to campus. Other relevant activities include project manager of the 2009 Clark County Wage & Benefit Survey, Recruitment & Retention Executive on Union Board, Faculty Assistant for Dr. Wendy Gradwohl, and Treasurer of Wittenberg Human Resource Management.
As an HR or business student associate at Honda (Marysville Ohio) this summer, Strawser’s administrative operation responsibilities included: supporting the administration business team with project planning; conducting topical research and benchmarking; gathering and analyzing data; reviewing and drafting recommendations in assigned areas; creating summary reports of research and assignment status; creating and updating reports; and creating presentation materials from hand written drafts and creating drafts independently. Her work also included tracking and analyzing non-exempt/exempt associate evaluations, tracking and analyzing team leader/production staff evaluations, participating in daily associate relations activities, providing customer service on general information regarding benefits and human resource systems, assisting with team leader/production staff roll-up and tracking of concerns, reporting progress on projects at weekly staff/managers meetings, and conducting informational meetings regarding company programs.

About the SHRM scholarship: The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Board of Directors awarded eight sponsorships of $5,000 each in each of SHRM's five geographic regions. A total of 40 awards and $200,000 were distributed. Applications for this scholarship were submitted by April 30, 2008, with winners announced in June so they could start on their summer internships. Winners were chosen by a selection committee comprised of SHRM volunteer leaders who judged the applications against their criteria.
