Management Department — Small Business Institute (SBI)

What is SBI?
- SBI is a capstone consulting experience in the Small Business Management class (MGT 480). Senior management majors observe business operations, identify opportunities and problems and offer recommendations to help a firm reach its goals.
Who can participate in SBI?
- Any management major who has performed with distinction in their 300-level MGT courses. Participation is by application.
Why should I participate in SBI?
- To learn firsthand about the largest growth area in our economy: small business.
- To develop your planning, organizing, problem solving, and communication skills.
- To apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in your management classes.
- To learn new and advanced level skills not taught in classes.
- To develop an project report which can serve double duty as a management portfolio element.
- To earn relevant experience important for your job search.
What is expected of me as a SBI consultant?
- Develop and execute a business assessment plan.
- Develop a project report, summarizing your activities, observations, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Meet weekly with your client and mentor.
- Keep client information strictly confidential.
- Keep accurate records of your client meetings and your daily project related activities, and deliver a weekly progress report
- Complete a peer SBI evaluation form, at midterm and semester's end.
- Deliver an end of semester oral review.
What does SBI participation cost?
- Students pay a $25 SBI fee plus transportation costs.
- You may incur transportation costs, depending on your client.
