Faith & Reason Class Schedule
[This schedule will be in progress during the semester.]
Updated 23 October 2009

This course meets each Friday of the semester (with a couple of exceptions) for one hour: 4:00-5:00 p.m.

The course is designed for discussion of matters of faith, approached rationally (assuming that Scripture, tradition, reason and/or experience are crucial sources for our discernment).  Furthermore, the instructor-of-record will participate as an adherent of a particular Christian tradition and as a member of the class assigned the duties of moderator without magisterium.
This course is also designed to produce as little value as possible for your transcript (1 credit; pass/fail; no gen. ed. credit; won't count [enough to matter] toward a major or minor in anything) -- with the hope that students will enroll / have enrolled for the sheer enjoyment and edification of the conversation.
We begin with C.S. Lewis' Miracles because it will give us a good way into talking about the relationship between the modern scientific worldview and the worldview(s) of Christianity.  There is no specific ground we have to cover in the course.  The point is to talk about what the students want to talk about -- within the general area denoted by the title for the course.
Students will participate in selecting what we discuss next.  I may recommend Phyllis Tickle's The Emergent Church. We could opt for a close reading of a biblical text.  Students will decide.

The default scheme for arriving at a final grade in the course (which is pass/fail or C/NC) will take into account class attendance & participation and also an oral exam at the end of the semester.  Students may participate in modifying this evaluation scheme.
