Dr. Heather Wright

"Hi! I'm Heather Wright, the department's political theorist. As Plato's Socrates asserts, 'Knowledge of ignorance is the beginning of wisdom.' To me, this is an excellent starting place for us all, students and faculty alike, as we quest after knowledge about the nature of politics. I passionately believe that the great works of political philosophy, which reflect the extraordinary diversity of human intellect and experience, can and should inform our understanding of contemporary public affairs and political practice. Let's explore!"

Publications/Works in Progress/Research Interests

“Lucrezia in La Mandragola: Machiavelli’s New Prince.” Interpretation: A Journal of Political Philosophy, Vol. 36, No. 2 (Winter 2009): 145-64.

"Irigaray, Luce" (1930-) in, Ness, I. The International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest: 1500 to the Present, 2nd Edition. Oxford: Blackwell Publishing (Peer Reviewed)(forthcoming).

My research and teaching focus on the history of political philosophy, feminist theory, and politics and literature. My dissertation, "Plato's Erotic Politics: A New Feminist Reading of the Symposium" is an engagement with Luce Irigaray's critique of Western philosophy and an argument for the relevance of Platonic political theory in thinking about contemporary feminist politics.

I am currently at work on "Irigaray's Appropriation: 'Sorcerer Love's' Flawed Reading of Plato's Symposium" and Amazons and Moms, Reporters and Artists: Women and Politics in the Novels of Don DeLillo.
