Dr. Stephen R. Smith
- On sabbatical spring semester 2004
Associate Professor of Anthropology, is a cultural anthropologist and an East Asianist, specializing in medical anthropology and Japanese society. He has published numerous articles and reviews in such scholarly journals as Reviews in Anthropology, Monumenta Nipponica, and the Journal of the Royal Anthropologist Institute. His research interests include the cross-cultural study of alcohol use and abuse, foodways, and alternative medical systems. Smith has received Fulbright grants to research drinking culture and alcoholism therapy in Japan, and to teach anthropology while doing research on foodways in Korea. Professors Smith and Linda Lewis were co-directors of the Lutheran Colleges China Consortium Program in Hangzhou, China, fall 2000 . Smith received his Diplome (French) from La Sorbonne in Paris, his B.A. from Tufts University, his M.A. from New York University, a Certificate of East Asian Studies and his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He joined Wittenberg faculty in 1990.
