Indeed, the exercise of relabeling streets takes many forms. There are numerous complexities in the ways “spaces and places are made, imagined, contested, and enforced,” (Gupta, Ferguson). Names can be transformed to reflect local meanings, individuals or families who made significant contributions to an area or group, noteworthy events in history, or geographical locations, among other things (Table 1).

The Significance of Street Names Yet, with varying ethnicities, classes, and generations, these elements can be perceived very differently and be cause for contention, just as “public, often official, and narrowly political memory might be very different than memory in the private spheres of family, workplace, neighborhood, and friends,” (Todovora). By recognizing or ridding the city of the past with said changes, these actions have considerable effects, for better or worse, on feelings of Bosnian identity and unity.
