I found drastic differences between the clothing I saw sold in stores and the clothing I observed women wearing in the city. In advertisements and clothing stores I saw a lot of low cut shirts, shirts that show cleavage, short shorts and short skirts, bright colors, manikins showing cleavage, and manikins showing their midriff (as seen on the top left of this page). During my week long visit in Sarajevo I saw one woman wearing a short skirt; one group of girls, approximately ten years of age, wearing shorts that showed their thighs; and no one showing cleavage. The popular media did not accurately symbolize the women’s appearances. Jean Kilbourne discusses the influence of advertising and claims the worst part is that people believe they are not being affected by the thousands of ads they see every day. In the U.S. I can clearly see how advertising affects the clothing women wear, but in Sarajevo the connection was not as visible.
