Sarajevo

Since its founding in the 15th century, Sarajevo has become one of the most important cities of Southeastern Europe. Thriving through the Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, and  Yugoslavia, Sarajevo has survived the test of time. Assaulted with history, the city was the location of the first global conflict of nations in 1914. Nearly eighty years later, Sarajevo became the focus of the world yet again when the city came under a medieval siege by its Serbian neighbors. The siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare. It began April 5, 1992 and ended February 29, 1996.

The past of the war and the present of the future is prevalent through the recovering city. Past and present in Sarajevo are not separated, they exist side by side as stated by Majo Dizdar. The restored buildings stand next to the demolished. The patch work of previously shelled walls are a reminder of the shattered past. The destruction of war has been on its way to recovery for 15 years; yet, the city still stands covered in the remnants of the war.
