Other Memorial Traditions
Cemeteries are present throughout the city and can be found within walls of most mosques and churches as well as on many of the hillsides surrounding the city. However, another method of honoring the victims of the war has been to place their names up on the walls of buildings. This is not done by the families of the deceased but by the schools, mosques and businesses who wish to honor their former students and co-workers. They are characterized by large brass plaques with blue letter, perhaps to symbolize their patriotism (Bosnia’s national colors being blue and gold). Another method of honoring the dead has been to engrave their names onto the walls of the mosques throughout the city. (As seen to the Right)
The fact that these memorials have been posted by other elements of the Sarajevan community and not just the families is a testament to the cohesion present within the city. Sarajevo was an epitomic example of what Tito strived to create and, during the war, the city’s ability to come together was its greatest strength. Memorials like these and the cemeteries throughout Sarajevo are an everlasting example of that strength which will forever be displayed for future generations.
