FK Sarajevo
History of FK Sarajevo
It was until the fall of Nazi control of Sarajevo that the team was finally formed. It only took them a year later until the team started competing in the Yugoslavian sports world under the name SD Torpedo. On November 3rd, 1946 they competed in their first match. In the following year they decided to change their name to SD Milicajac Sarajevo. Before the decade was out they once again changed the team name and shortened it the present name. In the early 1950’s FK Sarajevo joined the renowned Yugoslav First League. It wasn’t long until the team gained worldwide fame for their play back by famous Yugoslavian soccer players such as, Boško Prodanović and Asim Ferhatović. Majo Dizdar said, “the stadium was built through the engagement of two sports brigades, with over 400 brigadiers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the citizens and the youth of Sarajevo” (228). Without the loyal help of these workers the team would not have had a stadium to play in. Unfortunately, they had to suspend play due to the Bosnian War. Since the years after the war FK Sarajevo became a member of the newly formed Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Additionally, it has has continued play in the newly formed Premier League of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
