Steven C. Reynolds

steve reynolds Professor of Theatre and Dance and Director of General Education teaches courses in dramatic literature, acting, playwriting, art of the theatre, and a WittSem for new students on documentary theatre; he also directs plays and musicals for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Currently, he is Chair of the National Playwriting Program for Region III of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival which includes responding to productions of new student and faculty written plays in the region and serving on the regional executive and selection committees. He has received the Omicron Delta Kappa Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Matthies Research Award, and a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar grant. In 2003, he was chosen by Region III of the KCACTF to mentor student playwrights at the national festival in Washington, D.C. In 2001, he produced and directed Dan Stroeh's it is no desert which won the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival's National Student Playwriting Award. Reynolds has published several reviews in Theatre Journal and the article "Communication Between the Director and the Playwright," in the New England Theatre Journal. Reynolds has led or contributed to panels at national conferences in such areas as non-traditional casting, teaching of playwriting, period transfer of Shakespeare's plays, the use of masks in actor training, and teaching theatre in the new student seminar. Reynolds has studied theatre in London. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, Kent State University, and a guest director at Mira Costa College in California. His directing assignments have ranged from A Midsummer Night's Dream to The Miser to The Boys Next Door. In 1994, he directed an alumni showcase production in Hollywood, CA. As an actor, he has had significant roles in a number of plays. As a playwright, he has seen his works produced at Tufts University and at Tufts-in-London. In 1983-84 he originated and coordinated Wittenberg's national Martin Luther Playwriting Contest and directed the winning production, George Jolly's Life of Martin Luther. Reynolds holds a B.A. from Tufts University and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Reynolds joined the Wittenberg faculty in 1981.
