How Need-Based Financial Aid is Calculated

When you apply for federal student aid, the information you report is used in a formula, established by the U.S. Congress, that calculates your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), an amount you and your family are expected to contribute toward your education. If your EFC is below a certain amount, you may be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant. There isn't a maximum EFC that defines eligibility for the other financial aid programs.

The financial aid administrator calculates your cost of attendance and subtracts the amount you and your family are expected to contribute toward that cost. If there's anything left over, you're considered to have financial need.

Applying for Need-Based Financial Aid

Students applying for financial assistance based upon demonstrated need must:

1) Submit an Application for Admission. Though you must be an accepted student to receive a financial aid award, you may begin the financial aid process before an admission decision has been reached.

2) Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is available at your secondary school. Be sure to designate Wittenberg University, Title IV Code 003143, as a recipient of the analysis.

Since processing the forms takes approximately six weeks, they should be mailed as soon as possible after January 1. There is no fee associated with this application. Students are not required to submit the College Scholarship Service Financial Aid PROFILE.

Calculating Your Estimated Need

Most types of financial aid are based on one of two factors; your academic ability or your family's finances.

Financial aid offices at colleges all over the country weigh these two factors when they put together a financial aid package. Wittenberg University's EFC Estimator collects the same basic information the federal aid application collects and performs the same calculations on that information that the federal processor will perform. If the information you enter is accurate, the EFC estimate you receive will be accurate.

There is no charge for this service. We hope having this information helps you in your college search.

Balance Calculator

Receiving your financial aid package is not the final step in the process. To help you find the best payment option for your family, this “balance calculator” will show you three different payment options based on your financial aid package.
