The Legends of Wittenberg

Every college has its unique traditions, and Wittenberg is no different: Step on the bronze seal in the center of campus and you won’t graduate.  Kiss someone on Kissing Bridge, and you’ll end up marrying him or her.  Beware of the legendary ghost of a Civil War horse that supposedly haunts Myers Hall.

These legends and traditions, and many others, make up the unique Wittenberg experience.   But the most illustrious tradition of all may be the passing—both literally and figuratively—of the Wittenberg torch.  For the first time, an official Wittenberg torch was physically passed at Commencement 2006 to the Class of 2007 to symbolize the passing of light that defines the Wittenberg experience.  But long before this, Wittenberg students, faculty, staff and alumni have been inspired to pass their knowledge and talents on to others, all in an effort to lead lives of service, compassion and integrity.

Even faculty members do not dare to step on the university seal during academic processions. Students believe it is bad luck and a cause for failing their next exam – or possibly no graduating. It’s certain that not stepping on the seal is a sign of respect for all students, faculty and alumni.
Kiss someone here and you just might end up marrying them! The original Kissing Bridge was destroyed when an oak tree fell on it in 1997 and was rebuilt with gifts from the classes of 1996 and 1997. The class of 1997 was the first to “christen” the bridge at the end of its commencement ceremony.
Myers Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was the first campus building. Completed in 1851, it was built by the physical labor of students, faculty and staff members.
The Wittenberg Seal is at the center of campus and has the university motto, “Having Light We Pass It On To Others” inscribed around the edge. The Seal was a gift from the class of 1995 and is anchored in several feet of concrete to make certain no thieves ever attempt to abscond with it.
The Wittenberg torch was handcrafted by Kenny Lake, carpenter foreman, and Associate Professor of Art Ed Charney in 2006. The tradition of “passing the torch” from one class to another is performed during Commencement each year. The torch hangs in a place of honor in the main entry of Recitation Hall between commencements.
The Wittenberg monolith stands at the main entrance to the Historic Heart of campus and was given by the Class of 1953. The monolith enjoyed a celebration and name change when Wittenberg College became Wittenberg University in 1959.
