Serving Others

The Witt light is full of life, and a big part of that life is service.  Since our founding, service to others has formed the cornerstone of our culture.  Every year hundreds of Witt students lend their light throughout Springfield and the surrounding communities, teaching children to read, volunteering for the hospital and serving hot meals at a soup kitchen.  The annual on-campus Empty Bowls event recently raised more than $21,000 for Springfield’s Second Harvest Food Bank.

Witt students take their desire to help others across the United States and overseas as well.  Many students spend spring break working to improve the lives of others, such as cleaning and re-building homes affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Or volunteering at orphanages or clearing farm fields in the southern African Kingdom of Lesotho.
Whatever the location, community service is a way of life for Wittenberg students, and the experience changes their lives forever.

Celebrate Service and Make a Difference Day are annual community events that Wittenberg students, faculty and staff go into the Springfield community to perform neighborhood projects.
Lindsey Short, Class of 2008, adopted a Ukrainian orphanage and a Gypsy/Roma village, setting up a donation table and asking her fellow students to help their global neighbors in need.
Summer field study in southern African Kingdom of Lesotho has brought life-changing awareness to many Wittenberg students.
Working with “at-risk” kids at sites such as the Oesterlin Home and Project Jericho enrich both the children and Wittenberg students.
Wittenberg students volunteer at Habitat for Humanity sites around the world and in our local community. Spring break trips find many students with hammers-in-hand.
Wittenberg students work with young children to make items to sell at a local fundraising event.
