This, the Alumni Association's highest
honor, is given in grateful
recognition to Wittenberg alumni, faculty, staff and friends for service
to Wittenberg above and beyond what might
be expected of any contributor to the university's welfare.
For a man who prefers to keep his comments short and simple, Charles Brougher has certainly left a lasting impression at his alma mater. A science major, swimmer and a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Wittenberg, Brougher has continued to serve the university above and beyond what might be expected of any contributor to the college’s welfare since graduating 50 years ago. That fact recently prompted Wittenberg to recognize him with its prestigious Class of 1914 Award during Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, Oct. 28-29.
The chairman and CEO of Eagle Tool & Machine Co. in Springfield and its subsidiary E2 Precision Products of Cleveland, Ohio, Brougher served on the Wittenberg Board of Directors from 1991-1997. He also served as president of the Alumni Association, vice chair of the Board of Directors, chair of the Bill Edwards Drive Campaign, an adviser to all of Wittenberg’s major capital campaigns and was a member of the university’s Alumni Council for many years.
“Few alumni have been more committed to Wittenberg or served in more volunteer capacities than Charlie Brougher,” said former Vice President for Advancement Charles Dominick. “We’re very grateful for all that he has done for his alma mater.”
Brougher’s dedication also regularly extends to his hometown of Springfield, where he currently serves as chair of the board for Community Mercy Health Partners. In addition to chairing the long-range financial planning task force for the city of Springfield, Brougher has also served as the past chair of the Springfield-Clark County Chamber of Commerce and as past president of The Springfield Foundation, Springfield Rotary Club and the Springfield Country Club.
Yet, Wittenberg still remains a special place to Brougher and the members of his family, many of whom have longstanding ties to the nationally ranked institution.
“Wittenberg has been extremely good for me,” Brougher said, motioning to his wife, Susan Lemon Brougher ’57, with whom he will celebrate 50 years of marriage, Nov. 19.
“It is my hope that I’ll be good for Wittenberg.”
