What Student Interns Say

Below are some thoughts on what Wittenberg students have learned during their recent internship experiences:

"I have come to appreciate that political science provides a range of opportunities in which one can choose to specialize.   Being from a developing company, AI has helped me focus on what I would like to pursue in graduate school. I now intend to pursue a MA in Development Studies with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa and/or Women."   - intern at Amnesty International, Washington D.C. office

"I learned that I really want to go to law school for public policy and I was never planning to go before." -intern at Senator DeWine/Antitrust Subcommittee, Washington D.C.

"I am now more seriously considering moving to an area to teach where there is a higher concentration of native Spanish speakers, since I have the experience and knowledge to help serve them better than I did prior to this internship." -intern at local elementary school

"I was considering a career in finance but have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of a large company's marketing team.   The confidence in my creativity and thoughts has grown tremendously.   I feel confident applying to marketing positions in the future." -intern at Gordon Food Service

"I really learned about all the different behind the scenes aspects of running a personal business, something that I hope to do in the future.   Also, I learned the importance of networking, personal appearance, and attitude while on the job.   It was altogether an invaluable experience for me and my goals." -intern at Columbus Health Works

"I have discovered how important it is to do something like an internship to get a feel for what type of career I might like. As a result, I plan to more actively pursue opportunities in other areas of editing/writing/publishing.  I have also learned not to be afraid to ask questions about any project; editors are always more than willing to help out and are very patient.  At the same time, I often surprised myself by how frequently I can answer questions for myself and how quickly I am able to master a new task." -intern at Mazer Creative Services

"I am more sure than before that social work is where I want to go.  It seems a daunting task, but I have learned ways to deal with issues that arise and how not to go crazy with frustration and keep a positive outlook." -intern at Mental Health Services

"It was an excellent 'hands on' experience for graduate school and for my future practicum experiences.  I learned to communicate with school authorities and with children -- especially those in Special Ed. -intern at Kenwood Elementary School

"I have a better understanding of what I will need to accomplish my senior year to prepare for this career. I also got to experience what a typical day in the field is like - an assessment in the evaluation of whether or not you would like to pursue a career in a given field!"-intern at Toledo WNBO, NBC 24

One of the most significant things I have learned from this internship is the importance of persistence.  Because I want to enter the field of magazine journalism, I know that this skill is absolutely crucial in accomplishing tasks.  I've been able to practice this skill in several ways such as: constantly staying in touch with my interviewees, making sure my releases get edited in a timely manner and following up on projects assigned to me.  Persistence is a valuable skill I've been able to practice daily throughout my internship. -intern at Wittenberg University Communications
