Career Services -  4-Year Plan

Freshman Year - Exploration

*  Come to Career Services and register with www.eCampusRecruiter.com/wittenberg

*  Assess your skills, interests, and work values by completing Discover (on our website)

*  Develop strong academic study skills

*  Don't be afraid to ask questions-talk with career advisors, faculty, and alumni to begin exploring

     different career options

*  Check the career information in the Career Services Library and on the website

*  Start thinking about a summer exploratory (non-credit) internship in December; identify resumé

     builders

*  Consider job-shadowing professionals in your potential field of interest

*  Get involved in at least one campus or community activity to develop leadership and other

     marketable skills

Sophomore Year - Investigation

*   With your faculty advisor, confirm your choice of major and career direction, and clarify program

       requirements

*   Begin taking courses in your major area

*   Attend Alumni Careers Day during Homecoming to learn what recent graduates have done with

       their majors

*   Come to Career Services for information and participate in internship prep seminars

*   Develop your resumé-highlight your accomplishments

*   Start early-begin searching for summer internships in December

*   Start building a list of networking contacts and stay in touch

*   Examine your extra-curricular activities to identify your marketable skills

*   Practice your writing and speaking skills-take courses in communication, analytical and computer

      skills

Junior Year - Confirmation

  

*  Your Internship - Get priceless "real" experience in your field

*  Complete one or more community service projects

*  Stay up to date--Update your resumé

*  Start exploration in December for a career-related internship

*  Remain actively involved with student activities; focus on developing your leadership skills:

     measure your results

*  Join professional organizations affiliated with your field

*  Conduct informational interviews to develop contacts and gather information

*  Investigate graduate school options; talk with your advisor

           ***Gather information on the application process

*  Attend the Job and Internship Fair in the spring

*  Plan to do a summer research project if you are a science major or interested in attending

     medical or other health profession schools

*  Begin thinking about a job search plan, taking into consideration the market, your geographic

     preferences, financial needs, etc.

*  Consider taking graduate school entrance exams

Senior Year - Implementation

*  Refine and register your resumé on www.eCampusRecruiter.com/wittenberg during the first

     weeks of the Fall Semester

*  Remember that many large-company employers make decisions for May graduates during the fall

     semester

*  Take graduate school entrance exams

*  Meet with a career advisor to practice interviewing skills, develop a job search strategy, and

     update your resumé highlighting your results

*  Participate in the Job and Internship Fair in the spring

*  Finalize graduate school applications

          ***Obtain faculty letters of recommendation

          ***Even if you are not planning to go to Grad School right away, take the tests the fall

               semester-results are good for five years

*  A pply for fellowships and/or assistantships

*  Continue to strengthen your writing and presentation skills

*  Document your community service and campus leadership activities using measurable results

*  Practice mock interviews with Career Services staff; attend the Etiquette Dinner
