Laptop computers offer more flexibility in a work environment. To that end, campus laptops are setup to use three different network connections or environments. This computer can be used when connected directly (with a network cable), when used in a docking station that is connected directly (network cable from the docking station to wall), or wirelessly (where available).

*Note: In order to switch from one connection type to another, TURN OFF the computer first.

  1. On Campus plugged into the network (This is where you have the laptop plugged into the network via an Ethernet cable or with a docking station.):
    1. Plug in the Ethernet cable or put the laptop into the docking station
    2. Turn on the laptop
    3. Wait for the Logon screen to appear (the one asking to press ctrl-alt-delete)
    4. Close the Cisco VPN client window
    5. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and say ok to the warning
    6. Username: your Wittenberg Windows username
    7. Password: your Wittenberg Windows password
    8. Logon To: make sure it says WITTENBERG
    9. Click Log on
You are now logged on to the Wittenberg University campus windows network

  2. On Campus in a wireless access area (This is where you are not using the docking station and do not have a network cable connected to the computer. Make sure that there is not an Ethernet cable plugged in and it is not in a docking station.):
    1. Turn on the laptop
    2. Turn on the Wireless (the antenna button near top-right of keyboard)
    3. Wait for the logon screen to appear (the one asking to press ctrl-alt-delete)
    4. Wait for the wireless icon on the laptop (just below the monitor near the center) to start blinking rapidly
    5. *The wireless icon looks like an antenna with radiating circles and should be lit up and blinking rapidly green.
    6. On the Cisco VPN client select, Wireless and click connect
    7. When asked for username type in your Wittenberg E-mail username
    8. For the password type in your Wittenberg E-Mail password
    9. Click connect
    10. Wait for the Cisco VPN to disappear
    11. Press ctrl-alt-delete and say ok to the warning
    12. Username: your Wittenberg Windows username
    13. Password: your Wittenberg Windows password
    14. Logon To: make sure it says WITTENBERG
    15. Click Log on
You are now logged on to the Wittenberg University campus windows network

  3. Using the Campus laptop outside of campus:
    1. Turn on the laptop
    2. Wait for the logon screen to appear (the one asking to press ctrl-alt-delete)
    3. Press ctrl-alt-delete and say ok to the warning
    4. Username: localadministrator (all lower case, all one word)
    5. Password: password provided
    6. Type it specifically as it is written with lower and uppercase letters
    7. Logon To: make sure it says "Car110d-n01 (This computer)"
    8. Then click ok to log on
You are now logged on to the laptop using the localadministrator account. This means that you can do anything you want to with the laptop such as add or remove software and uninstall. DO NOT share this password with anyone else. The local account and password on this computer are governed by the same policies used for all campus computer accounts.

  4. Access campus files or resources remotely (using an ISP other than Wittenberg):
    1. Log on using the steps described in section C above.
    2. Double-click the Cisco VPN client icon on the desktop
    3. Double-click the Internet entry
    4. ALWAYS use the internet entry no matter how you are using the other person's connection. The wireless setting is specifically for campus wireless only.
    5. When prompted for a username type in your Wittenberg E-Mail username
    6. For the password use your Wittenberg E-Mail password
    7. Wait for the Cisco VPN Client to disappear, and a lock will now appear in the corner by the time You are now using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to reach Wittenberg's Network. You should be aware that while you are using the VPN client you do not have access to any other internet services. This means instant messenger clients or web browsers will not work while VPN is running. To disconnect VPN, double-click the lock icon and click disconnect.
