Using campus laser printers beginning spring 09
This spring marks the beginning of a pilot project with two goals in mind:
- Continue Wittenberg's waste reduction commitment
- Increase our own awareness of the impact our actions have on the environment
Print software will be deployed by Computing on all campus computers, while anyone printing to a campus network printer from a personal computer (Windows and Apple) will install it themselves.
The software provides information on total paper usage on campus that will assist in planning and budgeting.
The other thing the software does? Clicking the link in the PaperCut NG window leads to a screen where you see the impact your own printing choices make on the environment.
PLEASE NOTE!
The software will show a BALANCE when using it. This is a pilot project; no limits are set for printing, and NO ONE WILL BE CHARGED AS A RESULT of printing. Should the balance go beyond 0, don't worry - you can continue to print as you need.
Using PaperCut NG:
- Startup – the software installs into the Startup area of the computer, so it will always be ready for use without requiring you to run it before printing.
- Logging in – There is a small window that opens with the PaperCut NG software (you can close it; it will print anyway) and a small icon (check near the time in the corner). In the window, you’ll see a number representing the dollar amount “left” for the semester. (Remember – this is counting supplies only at this point.) Click the Details… link in the window, log in (Windows username and password), and you’ll see a balance history, pending print jobs, and the environmental impact over time.
- Printing – Click File, Print and select the printer as always. A window will pop up asking you to approve sending the print job. Click Print to send the job, Cancel if you reconsider the print job.
Installing PaperCut NG:
- Campus computers – no action required. The software is installed for you by policy for Windows computers, by Computing Staff for Apple computers.
- Personal computers on the campus network – download the PaperCut NG software from Wittenberg’s software download page: www.wittenberg.edu\software. Use your WittLink portal username and password for access. THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS – one for Windows, one for Apple (10.5 and higher only).
Windows:
- Run the papercutwin.exe program from Wittenberg's software download page
Apple (10.5 and higher only):
- Download the papercutapple.zip file from Wittenberg's software download page
- Run the Client-Local-Install file found in the MAC folder.
- Once the installation is finished you can delete the MAC folder.
