General Printing Troubleshooting

This advice applies to all printers, not just the MFDs.

Can't print, no error message
  • Turn off the computer and printer. Restart the computer then the printer and try again.
Can't print, printer not found message
  • Turn off the computer and printer. Restart the computer then the printer and try again.
Add a printer
  • Place a work order with the Solution Center for campus computers.
Change default printer
  1. Click Start, Settings, Printers
  2. Right click the printer you'd like to serve as the default printer
  3. Select "Set as default printer"
    • Note: In Windows, the printer that is last alphabetically will automatically become the default printer. You may wish to rename the printer in this case.
Printer will not pick up paper
  • Check seating of the paper tray - if loose or off center the printer will not pick up the paper
  • Ruffle the paper - the rollers will have a tough time picking up paper sticky from moisture, so separate the pages.
Paper jammed
  • Turn off the printer. Slowly pull the paper back out of the printer.
Streaking/off color printing
  • Laserjet Printers
    • Turn off the printer and try another toner cartridge. Replacements may be obtained from the warehouse; have the stock number available when you call or e-mail.
  • Deskjet Printers
    • Remove the cartridges from the printer. If the cartridges aren't empty, wipe the bottoms of the cartridges with a cloth and place them back in the printer. If they're empty, replace them. Replacements may be obtained from the warehouse; have the stock number available when you call or e-mail.
