Privacy, security, and usage rules
What security and privacy policies are in place to protect student information?
How does the campus protect students from identity theft?
- The policies listed above are in place to protect student information. Additional information is provided by the Wittenberg University Police and Security Department regarding postal mail, post office box security, and additional items.
How does the campus notify students of their rights under the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)?
Is network bandwidth limited for peer-to-peer software, gaming, Web cams, or other programs requiring high levels of network resources? Are Web pages filtered?
- Peer to Peer (P2P) and other types of file sharing services are not considered to be of academic value and are not permitted for student use either on campus computers or on personal computers that are using University resources such as WittConnect.
- Bandwidth monitoring is performed on a periodic basis to determine areas of high or unusual usage. Usage of particularly high bandwidth applications is limited. When several people are running the same types of programs (gaming for example) there is a limit to the amount of bandwidth allotted to that particular activity. The result may be a slowdown of network performance related to the activity. Wittenberg's primary mission is academic, and in support of that purpose academic use of electronic resources is protected from subversion by nonacademic pursuits. At the same time, the university's environment is one of open access and academic freedom and so in support of that environment no sites or servers are prohibited unless deemed to be a threat to network integrity or security.
- Web pages and sites are not filtered.
- More information: WittConnect Terms of Use
Is there a campus code of behavior about using computer resources?
Does the campus have policies addressing peer-to-peer file sharing, virus software, and copyright?
How does the campus manage e-mail spam?
- Our practices are to only restrict incoming e-mail addresses if they are either abusive in nature or pose a threat to mail services such as "flooding" the servers. The primary action taken by Computing Services is to mark e-mail messages that fail several tests as possible spam. Individual users may then decide what action to take including filtering these messages or deleting them. More information: Spam Tips
