Installing the Win95 DFSClient

Recommended: print these instructions.

On the Windows Intranet users home drives and webpages are setup using Distributed File System shares, or DFS shares for short. Windows 95 is not able to access DFS shares in a direct manner because it was written before the advent of DFS shares.

Microsoft released a DFS Client for Windows 95 allowing Windows 95 limited access to DFS shares. Limited access means that you can map to a part of the DFS Share and then you will have to navigate your way to the specific spot you wish. In Windows NT, 2000, and XP you can map directly to a specific area of a share (drive) such as your class space.

The DFS Client can be downloaded for free from Microsoft:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/win95/dfs/1.0/W95/EN-US/dfs_v41_win95client.exe
  1. Download this file to a spot on your Hard Drive that you can easily find.
    (For example: C:\Temp)
  2. Open the folder where you saved the file. Double-click the file called dfs_v41_win95client.exe.
  3. A License Agreement page. Click Yes.

  4. If you are connected to the Dial-Up Network, disconnect now.
  5. Right-click Network Neighborhood and select properties to open the Network Properties window.
  6. Click the Add button to access the Network Components window.
  7. Double-click the Service option, and it will start to build a database of services.
  8. Click the Have Disk button at the bottom right. Then type c:\windows\system\dfs and click OK.
  9. You will then have window with the DFS client listed. Double-click it in the list.
  10. Windows will copy files and bring you back to the Network properties listing. Notice that DFS client is in the list.
  11. Click Ok. You will be prompted for the Windows CD as it copies some files. When complete, you will need to restart the computer.
