Setting up the Wittenberg Network Modem Service for Windows 2000

Setting up your Windows 2000 system to use the Wittenberg Network Modem Service

  1. Click Start, Settings, Network and Dial Up Connections
  2. Double-click the Make New Connection icon
  3. Type the area code and click OK
  4. Click Apply, OK, then Next to start the setup Wizard
  5. From the choices listed, select "I want to set up my Internet account manually." and click Next
  6. Select "I connect through a phone line and modem", then click Next
  7. Click OK to install the drivers and files necessary.
    (You maybe prompted for your Windows 2000 CD)
  8. Select your modem from the list of installed modems and click Next
  9. Type your LDAP username and password in the spaces provided and click Next
  10. For Connection name, type Wittenberg University and click Next
  11. At the next window, type 322-0832 in the space provided for the Telephone number,and click Next.
    (Note: If you are not local to Wittenberg University, you will need to use the area code)
    (Note: If you are in a dorm you will need to type in 9,,937-322-0832)
  12. Select "No" to setting up an Internet mail account and click Next
  13. Remove the check from the box so that you do not connect to the Internet immediately and click Finish
  14. Click Start, Settings, Network and Dial Up Connections
  15. The Dial-Up Networking window will now have a listing for Wittenberg University
  16. Drag a copy of the icon to the desktop, and when it asks if you want to create a shortcut answer "Yes"
  17. Right-click the Wittenberg University listing to bring up a menu and select Properties
  18. Click the Networking Tab. Settings for type of dial up server should be PPP:Windows 95,98,NT4/2000, Internet, and Components selected should be Internet Protocol (TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networks
  19. Click the TCP/IP listing and click Properties. Fill in the following fields:
    • Obtain IP Address Automatically
    • Primary DNS: 136.227.1.6
    • Secondary DNS: 136.227.1.5
  20. Click the Advanced button, then select the DNS tab
  21. Click the Append these DNS suffixes option
  22. Click Add and type wittenberg.edu. Click Add
  23. Remove the check from the "Register this connection's Addresses in DNS"
  24. Remove the check from the Enable LM Hosts lookup option
  25. Click OK, and then click OK again
  26. Click OK to finish the settings
  27. After clicking Close you will be prompted to restart your computer to finish setting up Dial-Up Networking
  28. Log back in as usual
  29. From here you need to follow the steps in Dialing into the Network

Dialing into the Network

Once your system is set up to use Wittenberg's Network Modem service, use these steps to connect.

  1. Double-click the shortcut for Wittenberg University
  2. Enter your Wittenberg LDAP username and password
  3. Click OK
  4. Windows will then dial and connect you to the Wittenberg Network
  5. Make sure you hang-up and logout of your machine when you are finished
