Setting up the Wittenberg Network Modem Service for Windows Millennium Edition

Setting up your Windows ME system to use the Wittenberg Network Modem Service

  1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications,and select Internet Connection Wizard.
  2. From the choices listed, select "I want to set up my Internet account manually." and click Next.
  3. Select "I connect through a phone line and modem", then click Next.
  4. Click OK to install the drivers and files necessary.
    (It may prompt you for your Windows ME CD, if it does put it into the CD drive).
  5. Select your modem from the list of installed modems and click Next.
  6. Type your Windows username and Windows password in the spaces provided and click Next.
  7. For Connection name, type Wittenberg University and click Next.
  8. At the next window, type 322-0832 in the space provided for the Telephone number, and click Next.
    (Note: If you are not local to Wittenberg University, you will need to use the area code)
    (Note: If you are in a dorm you will need to type in 9,,937-322-0832)
  9. Select "No" to setting up an Internet mail account and click Next.
  10. Remove the check from the box so that you do not connect to the Internet immediately and click Finish.
  11. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, and select Dial Up Networking.
  12. The Dial-Up Networking window will now have a listing for Wittenberg University.
  13. Drag a copy of the icon to the desktop.
  14. When it asks if you want to create a shortcut answer "Yes".
  15. Right-click the Wittenberg University listing to bring up a menu and select Properties.
  16. Click the Configure button to open the modem settings window.
  17. Click the Options tab make sure box boxes under "Connection Control" are not checked.
  18. Click OK to return to the General properties tab.
  19. Click the Networking tab. The settings should be PPP Internet, Windows 2000/NT, Windows ME for the type of dial up server, enable software compression for the Advanced options, and TCP/IP for the Allowed network protocols.
  20. Click the TCP/IP Settings button, and fill in the following fields:
    • Primary DNS: 136.227.1.6
    • Secondary DNS: 136.227.1.5
    Click OK.
  21. From here you need to follow the steps in Dialing the Network when you wish to use the service

Dialing into the Network

Once your system is set up to use Wittenberg's Network Modem service, use these steps to connect.

  1. Double-click the Shortcut for Wittenberg University.
  2. In the first window type your username and LDAP password. You can put a check in the box labeled Save password if desired. Click the Connect button to dial into the Dial Up Network.
  3. After a minute or two, you will be prompted to enter your username and LDAP password. This will make the connection to the Wittenberg Windows Intranet. Again, you can click the save password box to have it remember your password.
  4. You will see a message about a lack of a domain server. This message can be ignored, so just click OK. One more screen will appear to let you know that the connection was established. Before you click on Close, you can put a check in the box at the bottom left. This will prevent this screen from appearing again.
