Setting up the Wittenberg Network Modem Service for Windows NT 4.0

Installing Dial-Up Networking

If you already have Dial-Up Networking installed you can skip this part and go straight to Part 2. Setting up your Windows NT system to use the Wittenberg Network Modem Service. If you are unsure you can check by following steps 1-4 below. If there is already a check in the box labeled Dial-Up Networking, then you can skip ahead to Part 2.

  1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, opening the Control Panel window.
  2. In the Control Panel window double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties click the Windows Setup tab.
  4. Find the Communications line, and double-click to select it.
  5. In the Communications list, put a check in the Dial-Up Networking box and click OK.
  6. Click OK again.
  7. If you receive a message that it cannot find some files, it means you need to put your Windows CD into the CD-ROM drive. Put your Windows CD in the drive, wait a moment, and click OK.
  8. Type D:\winnt in the "Copy Files from:" box. Note that your CD-ROM drive may be another letter; type the appropriate drive letter.
  9. If your computer does not already have a name, fill in the first line of the window with something unique to you, but containing only alphabetic characters. The second line can be anything you wish as well. On the third fill in a short description you wish to use for your computer. When finished click Close.
  10. After clicking Close you will be prompted to restart your computer to finish setting up Dial-Up Networking.
  11. When your computer restarts you will be asked to log on to your computer. Type WITTENBERG\username (replacing username with your Windows username) and click OK. Then click OK again without typing anything in the lines. When the desktop appears a new Network Neighborhood icon will be listed.
  12. Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and select properties from the menu.
  13. In the Network properties window, you need to remove everything EXCEPT these items:
    • Client for Microsoft Networks
    • Dial Up Adapter
    • NetBEUI
  14. Double-click Client for Microsoft Networks. In the Client for Microsoft Networks Properties window, check the Logon to Windows NT Domain box. In the Windows NT domain: line type WITTENBERG and click OK.
  15. Click the Add button to get the Select Network Component Type window. Double-click Protocol.
  16. In the Select Network Protocol screen, select Microsoft on the left, and double-click TCP/IP on the right.
  17. Back at the Network properties window make sure the listing under Primary Network Logon: reads Windows Logon. Then double-click on TCP/IP.
  18. On the TCP/IP properties screen select the DNS Configuration tab.
  19. Under DNS Configuration fill out the following entries as follows:
    • DNS Server Search Order: 136.227.1.6 and 136.227.1.5
    • Domain Suffix Search Order: wittenberg.edu
  20. Click OK.
  21. At the Network properties window, click on OK.
  22. The computer may prompt you for the Windows CD again. After all the files have been copied Windows will ask to restart the computer. Click Restart.

Setting up your Windows NT system to use the Wittenberg Network Modem Service

This section assumes that you have Dial-Up Networking installed on your system. If you do not, or are not sure, please go back to Installing Dial-Up Networking.

  1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories and click the Dial Up Networking icon.
  2. At the "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" window, click Next.
  3. At the "Make New Connection" window, type Wittenberg University in the space and click Next.
  4. At the next window, type 322-0832 in the space provided for the Telephone number, and click Next
    (Note: If you are not local to Wittenberg University, you will need to use the area code)
    (Note: If you are in a dorm you will need to type in 9,,937-322-0832)
  5. Click Finish.
  6. The Dial-Up Networking window will now have a listing for Wittenberg University.
  7. Right-click the Wittenberg University listing to bring up a menu and select Properties.
  8. Click the Configure button to open the modem settings window.
  9. Click the Options tab make sure box boxes under "Connection Control" are not checked.
  10. Click OK to return to the General properties tab.
  11. Click the Server Types tab. Make sure that only the first and last boxes are checked.
  12. Click the TCP/IP Settings button, and fill in the following fields:
    • Primary DNS: 136.227.1.6
    • Secondary DNS: 136.227.1.5
    Click OK, and then click OK again to get back to the Dial Up Networking window.
  13. Drag a copy of the icon to the desktop, and when it asks if you want to create a shortcut answer "Yes".
  14. From here you need to follow the steps in Dialing the Network when you wish to use the service

Dialing into the Network

Once your system is set up to use Wittenberg's Network Modem service, use these steps to connect.

  1. Double-click the Shortcut for Wittenberg University.
  2. Type your LDAP username and password. You can put a check in the box labeled Save password if desired. Click on the Connect button to dial the Dial Up Network.
  3. After a minute or two you will be prompted to enter your username and LDAP password. This will make the connection to the Wittenberg Windows Intranet. Again, you can click on the save password box to have it remember your password.
  4. You will see a message about a lack of a domain server. This message can be ignored, so just click OK. One more screen will appear to let you know that the connection was established. Before you click Close, you can put a check in the box at the bottom left. This will prevent this screen from appearing again.
