Setting up the Wittenberg Network Modem Service for Windows XP

Setting up your Windows XP system to use the Wittenberg Network Modem Service

  1. Click Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections
  2. Click Create a connection to the network at your workplace
  3. Select Dial-up Connection and click Next
  4. Type "Wittenberg Dial-Up" in the line labeled Company Name and click Next
  5. Type "322-0832" in the line labeled Phone number:
    (Note: If you are not local to Wittenberg University, you will need to use the area code)
    (Note: If you are in a dorm you will need to type in 9,,937-322-0832)
  6. Click Next
  7. Check the box labeled Add a shortcut to this connection on My Desktop and click Finish
  8. Click Network Connections
  9. Right-click Wittenberg Dial-Up and click Properties from the gray menu that appears
  10. Click the Options tab
  11. Make sure all four options under Dialing options are checked
  12. Click the Networking tab
  13. Make sure that at least the following items are listed in the box labeled This connection uses the following items:
    • Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    • Client for Microsoft Networks
  14. Click Internet Protocl (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button
  15. Make sure both options are set to the Obtain ... automatically options
  16. Click the Advanced... button
  17. Click the DNS tab
  18. Click the Add... button (the one towards the top), type "136.227.1.5" and click Add
  19. Click the Add... button (the one towards the top), type "136.227.1.6" and click Add
  20. Click the Append these DNS suffixes (in order): option
  21. Click the Add... button (this time the lower button), type "wittenberg.edu" and click Add
  22. In the box labeled DNS suffix for this connection: type "wittenberg.edu"
  23. Click the WINS tab
  24. Make sure the box labeled Enable LMHOSTS lookup is empty
  25. Make sure the option labeled Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected
  26. Click OK
  27. Click OK
  28. Click OK
  29. Close the Network Connections window by clicking on the Red X located at the top right
  30. Restart your computer
  31. From here you need to follow the steps in Dialing the Network when you wish to use the service

Part 2. Dialing into the Network

Once your system is set up to use Wittenberg's Network Modem service, use these steps to connect.

  1. When you start Windows XP you will see the Wittenberg Dial-Up icon on the desktop
  2. Double-click the icon
  3. In the line labeled User name: type your Wittenberg University username
  4. In the line labeled Password: type your Wittenberg LDAP password
  5. Make sure the box labeled Save this user name and password for the following users: is unchecked
  6. Click Dial
